Albert Bierstadt, (American, b. Germany, 1830-1902)
Dawn at Donner Lake, California, ca. 1871-1902
Oil on paper on canvas
Gift of Mrs. C.N. Dietz, 1934
If there is a single painter whose name is instantly associated with grand Western landscapes, it is Bierstadt. The artist made his first trip West in 1858, and traveled there again in subsequent decades; his last excursion was 1884. His dramatic mountain and marine views, often quite large, were enormously popular, but he also painted many less significant scenes of romantic frontier life. The Donner Party held the fascination of the public who were well aware of the fate of this band of unfortunate pioneers. The railroad had alleviated fear of treacherous travel by promising safe passage through the mountains. Bierstadt's carefully composed romantic paintings are full of details that are faithful to nature, but do not necessarily document a particular time and place.
Following the gallery, talk guests will indulge in a satisfying lunch featuring crab cake salad with remoulade sauce, and warm rye bread pudding for dessert.
