(1936)
May 23 @ 6:30 pm (with pre-screening introduction) & May 28 @ noon
In Amsterdam of 1642, master painter Rembrandt Van Rijn (Charles
Laughton), enjoys a rich, full life in a beautiful, blinding, swirling
mist of fame and fortune. But with the sudden death of his beloved wife
and muse, his work takes a dark, sardonic turn that quickly offends even
his most loyal patrons. Bankrupt and bereft, he finds comfort in the
arms of pretty, young Hendrickje (Elsa Lanchester), a servant in his
home. Now, offered a surprising second chance at love, will he summon
the courage to overcome his demons or will tragedy continue to haunt one
of the greatest painters who ever lived?
POLLOCK (2000)
May 30 @ 6:30 pm (with pre-screening introduction) & June 4 @ noon
In August of 1949, Life Magazine ran a banner headline that begged the
question: "Jackson Pollock: Is he the greatest living painter in the
United States?" The film is a look back into the life of an
extraordinary man, a man who has fittingly been called "an artist
dedicated to concealment, a celebrity who nobody knew." As he struggled
with self-doubt, engaging in a lonely tug-of-war between needing to
express himself and wanting to shut the world out, Pollock began a
downward spiral.
