June 19 World Refugee Day
10 am-2 pm

Resettled refugees have overcome unbelievable odds to find peace and freedom in Nebraska. Join us to celebrate their stories, talents, and cultures!

FREE outdoor event! Bring a blanket, lawn chair, water bottle, and picnic if you wish. Physical distancing strongly encouraged; masks required for non-vaccinated persons who enter the building for restrooms or to visit the Museum.

  • CULTURE FAIR - "visit" countries of origin; meet artisans and purchase their candles, jewelry, leatherwork, and more; get a henna tattoo; make a butterfly puppet; and stop by the photo booth
  • REFUGEES GOT TALENT! - enjoy music, dance, poetry, and fashions from Afghan, Karen, Nepali, Somali, South Sudanese, Sudanese, and other contributors
  • FOOD TRUCK - purchase Syrian cuisine from Zaytuna food truck

Want to help? Bring gently used books for the International Council for Refugees & Immigrants Youth Book Donation Drive. Children's, young adult, fiction/non-fiction, dictionaries, self-help, art, and motivational books... all are welcome!

Not vaccinated yet? COVID vaccines (Johnson and Johnson) will be available through the Douglas County Health Department. The vaccine is free and available for anyone age 18 and older; individuals age 18 need a parent/guardian present.

What if there is inclement weather? Sadly, the event will be cancelled; a decision will be made early in the day, and posted on this page.

Presented in partnership with Omaha Refugee Task Force and Omaha Public Schools Foundation. Thank you to all the partnering organizations and volunteers!
