Art à la King presented by Taylor J. Acosta, Ph.D., Associate Curator of European Art
Jehan Georges Vibert (French, 1840-1902), The King of Rome, 1900, oil on canvas mounted on panel, Gift of Francis T. B. Martin, 1990.7
Possessed of a cynical wit and great technical ability, Vibert produced numerous anecdotal pictures that satirized the Catholic Church, while never abandoning the “higher” genres of history and allegorical painting. The artist invented a number of products for painters, including special varnishes, brushes, and a red paint, which he named "Vibert Red" which he used for many of his cardinal paintings. Savor this painting along with a menu featuring vibrant dishes from the kitchen!
Joslyn's Adult programs are generously supported by Gilbert M. and Martha H. Hitchcock Foundation, Holland Foundation, Peter Kiewit Foundation, Omaha Steaks, Fred and Eve Simon Charitable Foundation, Streck.
