Mozart with Condoleezza Rice and Thomas Wilkins

Join Maestro Thomas Wilkins as he crosses off one of his “bucket list” items – performing again with good friend Dr. Condoleezza Rice, 66th United States Secretary of State! Mozart’s barnburner of a symphony, No. 35, closes the program, with an opening as momentous as the occasion itself, and a finale that will blow you away.

Gallery Talks

Gallery talks presented by Karin Campbell, Phil Willson Curator of Contemporary Art begin in Pavilion Gallery 14 at 1:00 pm and 1:25 pm (participants, please select one session).

Frank Stella (American, born 1936), Nogaro, 1982, mixed media on aluminum, Gift of the Phillip Schrager Collection of Contemporary Art from Terri, Harley and Beth Schrager, 2014.2

Stella’s rhythmic Nogaro, an apt accompaniment to Mozart’s Symphony No. 36, is from Stella’s Circuit series (1980–84), twenty-two wall-mounted paintings all named for cities with automobile racetracks. These playful, curvilinear constructions reveal the loose approach to form that Stella achieved late in his career and epitomize his deft handling of three-dimensional space. Equally energetic, Mozart’s Symphony offers suspense throughout--its introduction, yielding and full of pathos, moves to a festive Allegro before giving way to slow notes that fail to prepare us for the sudden rush at the end.
