Davis developed his signature work, the stripe painting, in the company of the Washington Color School, a loose, regional group primarily concerned with the broader Color Field movement. Painting the stripe in seemingly endless permutations, Davis viewed it “in the same way one artist uses the nude and another landscape.” A mixture of structure and improvisation, the stripe became the vehicle for Davis’s explorations into the dynamics of color and interval. Comparing the “exquisite monotony” of his paintings to music, Davis explained, “Somewhere in [the concerto] there is a passage that repeats the same note for a least a minute and a half. Dropped right in the middle of that rather baroque composition it’s like a searchlight, it’s staggering...monotony and repetition are the main points of the composition.”
