Hayv Kahraman (Iraqi, b. 1981), Mnemonic Artifact 3, 2017, oil on linen, Museum purchase with funds from the Art Purchase Fund, 2017.6

Hayv Kahraman left her native Iraq at the age of eleven, in the midst of the first Gulf War. Examining what she calls a “migrant consciousness,” eastern and western worlds collide in Kahraman’s work, the female body caught in the crosshairs. While some of her subjects embody desirable personas—regal, sensuous, or playful—she often portrays them as distorted, disfigured, and broken. Kahraman’s recent paintings are crosshatched with tiny cuts across their surfaces. After incising the canvas, Kahraman fed painted linen strips through the slits in a reference to a mahaffa, an Iraqi fan made of palm fronds that she recalls carrying with her when her family left Baghdad. By weaving her paintings in this manner, Kahraman archives her memories of time spent as a refugee.

Following the curator gallery talk, guests will move to the fountain court for a menu of tenderloin of beef kabobs, saffron basmati rice, grilled fresh vegetables, and chocolate pecan torte for dessert.
