Featured Artwork: Daniel Ridgeway Knight, The Letter, 1911
In 1872 Daniel Ridgway Knight settled permanently in France, one of several American émigrés who flooded Paris in the late-nineteenth century. Some, such as Mary Cassatt, sought out the newest artistic styles and embraced Impressionism, while others followed the trends of the French Academy and found success exhibiting in the annual Salons. Knight exemplifies the latter group. By the mid-1890s, Knight established a home in Rolleboise, some forty miles west of Paris, and there began to paint the scenes that were to make his work so sought after by contemporary collectors—views of his garden. Collectors from across the globe vied for these works which featured attractive local girls in his beautiful garden terrace overlooking the Seine.
Following the gallery talk guests will enjoy lunch with a French flair—beef bourguignon, red skin bistro mashed potatoes, glazed baby carrots, French hard roll with butter rosette, and raspberry sherbet with pirouette cookie.
Bon appétit!
