Art Adventures

Art Adventures LIVE! on Facebook
Fridays @ 10:30 am
Learn about art in Joslyn’s collection, and make some of your own, all from the comfort of your kitchen table! Gather up a few simple materials and join us LIVE! on Facebook every Friday at 10:30 am for an art-making lesson led by Studio Programs Manager, Andy Smith.

Materials needed for each week’s activity are listed below (and will be broadcast at 10 am each Friday). Need supplies? Free kits will be available for pick-up outside of Joslyn each Thursday, beginning at 9 am, while supplies last.
Note: When we're not in "COVID-19 mode," Art Adventures is a weekly drop-in program held at the Museum, where preschool-aged children and their adult chaperones visit the galleries to explore an artwork and make art of their own in the studio.

FREE for Joslyn Members! Click here to join.
General Public: $10 adult/child pair per session; $2 each additional child

Paper Pots - Friday, August 7 @ 10:30 AM

Create a two-dimensional paper pot inspired by Joslyn’s collection of ancient Greek ceramics. We’ll learn how these ancient clay pots were made while we make symmetrical paper pots of our own that tell stories of heroic narratives framed by geometric pattern.

Supplies Needed:
12x18 Orange Construction Paper
Black Crayon
Scissors

Kinetic Balance - Friday, August 14 @ 10:30 AM
Construct a carefully balanced wire sculpture like the one by Alexander Calder hanging from the ceiling in Joslyn’s galleries. We’ll bend and twist wire and assemble colorful shapes to find a perfect balance so that our sculptures slowly move and rotate as air flows around the suspended artworks.

Supplies Needed:
Aluminum Armature Wire: 18”: 1 piece; 9” 2 pieces
Twisteez Sculpture Wire: 1 piece
Craft Foam Sheets: 4.5”x6”; three pieces of different colors
Scissors
Black Crayon

Home is Where the Art Is - Friday, August, 21 @ 10:30 AM
Make a masterpiece about where you live. We’ll create symbols and images that tell people about you your home, neighborhood, city, state, or your country. Artists in Joslyn galleries like Grant Wood, Dale Nichols, and Purvis Young will be our guides as we think about what makes where we live so special.

Supplies Needed:
11”x15” All Media Paper
Black Crayon
Watercolor Paint

Getting Abstract - Friday, August 28 @ 10:30 AM
Some works of art look like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Artists sometimes use the elements of art to show us ideas that exist only within their imaginations or they explore and experiment with the power of color, energy of lines, and attitude of shapes. We will get abstract together with the help of purely abstract artists from Jolyn’s collection.

Supplies Needed:
11”x15” All Media Paper
Thin Cardboard: 4”X6”; two pieces
Scissors
Black Crayon
Watercolor Paint

Power Portraits - Friday, July 10 @ 10:30 AM
Take a look in the mirror to create a self-portrait or draw someone special to you as we learn to create drawings of people using simple facial proportion rules, then mount them to colorfully patterned backgrounds full of color like Mickalene Thomas’ giant portrait painting in Joslyn’s galleries.

Supplies Needed:
11”x15” Patterned Paper (pattern can be drawn)
11”x15” All Media Paper
Scissors
Glue Stick
Watercolor Paint

Night-Scapes - Friday, July 17 @ 10:30 AM
Learn basic watercolor techniques to create a night time sky full of simmering stars over a dusky landscape like Gustave Dore’s 1877 Mountain Landscape.

Supplies Needed:
11”x15” All Media Paper
White Crayon
Black Crayon
Watercolor Paint

Disappearing Space - Friday, July 24 @ 10:30 AM
Join us to look to see how artists in the gallery use the science of perspective to create illusions of space within a work of art. We’ll learn to create a painting of a room full of luxury and a sense of space like the somber scene depicted in Jean-Leon Gerome’s The Grief of the Pasha.

Supplies Needed:
11”x15” All Media Paper
Black Crayon
Ruler
Watercolor Paint

Express Yourself - Friday, July 31 @ 10:30 AM
Tell us how you really feel using brushstrokes and line! Expressionist artists from Joslyn’s galleries like Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, and Michael Goldberg will show us how to create marks full of energy, nervousness, or relaxation before we experiment with brushstrokes and drawn lines in paintings of our own.

Supplies Needed:
11”x15” All Media Paper
Black Crayon (other colors too if you have them)!
White Crayon
Watercolor Paint
