The Fantastic World of Dan Yaccarino
1/12/2013 - 4/14/2013

At Joslyn, support for the exhibition and related programming is provided in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Webster Family Foundation.

"The images in a picture book are the driving forces that tell the story. The words tell only what the pictures can’t.”
– D.Y.

Children the world over know Dan Yaccarino from his picture books — including Unlovable, The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau, Five Little Pumpkins, and All the Way to America, in addition to the Parent's Choice Award-winning animated TV series Oswald (Nick Jr) and Emmy-winning Willa's Wild Life (NBC and Qubo), and character designs for The Backyardigans (Nickelodeon). Yaccarino’s distinctly retro-style illustrations touch hearts and transport readers back in time. His bold, stylized pictures add wit and energy to his own stories as well as to the work of such prestigious authors as Margaret Wise Brown, Jack Prelutsky, Kevin Henkes, and Patricia MacLachlan.

Art lovers of all ages will enjoy exploring The Fantastic World of Dan Yaccarino’s approximately 70 paintings that illustrate fourteen children’s books created since 1997. In addition to the titles listed above, the exhibition features artworks from Every Friday, Lawn to Lawn, Mother Goose, Trashy Town, Who Will Sing a Lullaby?, and others.

The artist lives with his wife and their two children in New York City and creates his quirky characters in a studio full of vintage toys.

This exhibition was organized by National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, Abilene, Texas.
