In 1920, Mrs. Sarah Joslyn paid half a million dollars — an enormous sum in those days — for property on Dodge Street, between 22nd and 24th Streets, prime real estate in an old residential area on the bluffs above the busy downtown and immediately accessible to those working or shopping there. For her fine arts center, place was as important as purpose. Adjacent to a school (Central High School, itself occupying the site of the Nebraska Territorial Capitol). Near citizens’ homes. Close, but not too close, to the commercial and the retail. On a hill. With a view.
For more than 80 years, Joslyn has been here at 2200 Dodge. Shifting, growing, changing, modernizing, rethinking itself over and over on this Omaha corner; flooded with millions of people who all have known it exactly where it is today — 22nd & Dodge, two-two-zero-zero Dodge, twenty-two hundred Dodge.
It is our hope that this blog draws you a little deeper into this place that is Joslyn Art Museum. Bright, talented, creative people work here, and make the Museum what it is today. Here, they will speak to you directly about what they do and how they do it. You will have the opportunity to gain new insights about art, artists, and topics challenging the art world; explore Joslyn’s incredible history; get a look into how museums operate; read behind-the-scenes stories about how our programs and projects develop, and get hints for making your life at home and work more artful. People often say, “Wow, it would be wonderful/interesting/challenging/inspiring to work in a Museum.” It certainly is. Find out why from people who do. Enjoy our blog.
