The Omaha Symphony presents its 2018-19 Symphony Joslyn Series in Joslyn’s Witherspoon Concert Hall on six select Sundays, October through May, at 2 pm. Joslyn curators present pre-concert gallery talks at 1 pm and 1:25 pm showcasing works of art inspired by concert themes.
Grieg’s best-loved work—memorable for the calm beauty of “Morning Mood” and the frenzied “In the Hall of the Mountain King”—headlines a program that opens with Mozart’s dramatic serenade. Bartók’s work for strings pays homage to his Hungarian roots, with turns that sound like Handel being coerced into a gypsy dance. Joan Tower’s Chamber Dance weaves the orchestra through a tapestry of solos and duets.
Jayce Ogren, conductor
MOZART: Serenade No. 12
BARTÓK: Divertimento
TOWER: Chamber Dance
GRIEG: Peer Gynt Suite
Pre-concert gallery talks with Joslyn curators begin at 1 pm and 1:25 pm in Gallery 10 (participants select one session).

Deeply influenced by the visionary painter Wassily Kandinsky, Jonson sought throughout his career to express the spiritual qualities underlying material appearances. In 1912, he became the art director for the avant-garde Chicago Little Theater, a position that inspired Jonson to adopt the belief that all of the arts—painting, theater, dance, and music—were but facets of the single spiritual truth underlying all phenomena. After moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1924, Jonson devoted himself to capturing the beauty of New Mexico's landscape while seeking to comprehend the dynamic forces of nature. From these studies, he composed some of his finest, rhythmic works, including Composition Five—Wind. In 1938, as part of his desire to connect the spiritual and the abstract, Jonson co-founded the Transcendental Painting Group whose members were committed “to carry painting beyond the appearance of the physical world, through new concepts of space, color, light, and design.”
