The Omaha Symphony presents its 2018-19 Symphony Joslyn Series in Joslyn’s Witherspoon Concert Hall on six select Sundays, September through May, at 2 pm. Joslyn curators present pre-concert gallery talks at 1 pm and 1:25 pm showcasing works of art inspired by concert themes.
Mendelssohn offers musical postcards from his trip to Italy: lively Venice, devout Rome, elegant Florence and the sultry southern countryside. Lukas Foss describes his concerto as “an homage to something I love, a handshake across the centuries.” Principal Flute Maria Harding showcases her talent in this tribute to composers of the Renaissance.

Daniel Huntington (American, 1816-1906)
Roman Ruins in Southern Italy, 1848
oil on canvas
Gift of J.L. Brandeis and Sons, 1952.97
A powerful luminary within the New York art world during the second half of the nineteenth century, Daniel Huntington enjoyed a prolific career spanning the genres of history and literary painting, landscape, and portraiture. In 1839, Huntington made his first of several trips abroad, traveling to England, France, and Italy, a trip popular among American artists interested in studying classical antiquity and draftsmanship. During lengthy sojourns in Florence and Rome—the Joslyn work was most likely begun during the artist’s stay in Rome between 1842 and 1845—Huntington was inspired by ancient religious art and created many paintings of Roman ruins in Arcadian settings. Huntington’s inclusion here of an idealized, classical figure links the American experience to ancient history and the rise and fall of great civilizations.
