This rhythmic landscape by American Regionalist Thomas Hart Benton illustrates how the Missouri native used his art to celebrate what he saw as ordinary American virtues. Benton’s subjects ranged from colorful, rough-hewn Midwestern characters to broad epics of American life and history tinged with irony and social commentary. In the depths of the Depression, such images were seen by many to express the enduring spirit of the nation.
The Hailstorm is quintessential Benton with its rural theme, vibrant color, tilted perspective, gangling figures, and undulating landscape. Although it shows the timeless drama between humans and nature, memories of the 1930s dust bowl made this 1940 painting topical. Stressing that artists should depict what they know best, Benton pointed out that his observations of farm life led to a change in this composition: after completing a study for
The Hailstorm, he added in the final work the man behind the mule, for no self-respecting farmer would leave an animal in the field during such a storm.
