The Omaha Symphony Chamber Orchestra presents its 2016-17 season, Symphony Joslyn, in Joslyn’s Witherspoon Concert Hall, on select Sundays, September through May, at 2:00 PM. Joslyn curators present pre-concert
gallery talks at 1 pm and 1:25 pm showcasing works of art inspired by
concert themes.
Mary Bircher, harp; Kathleen Wychulis, harp
Beethoven at his sunniest, his Fourth Symphony is witty and full of earthy humor and high spirits. Scored for two harps, the lush and exotic Mozetich concerto offers a spectacle for both eyes and ears. Poulenc’s charming suite is a contemporary take on Renaissance dance music.
POULENC:
Suite française
MOZETICH: Concerto for Two Harps, “The Passion of the Angels”
BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 4

A fitting accompaniment to Mozetich’s harp concerto and Poulenc’s Renaissance reflection is Joslyn’s magnificent altarpiece from the workshop of Jan Gossaert,
Madonna and Child with Saints Catherine and Agnes. Situated in the foreground of the heavenly chamber are two angelic musicians—one playing the harp and the other a lute. Similar to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, the scene begins with a slow introduction of deep darkness and suspense before the bold arrival of lively music announced with a dramatic splash of vivid color. The exaggerated elegance of figures, with their exotic costume and abundance of crumbled draperies, is characteristic of the ornate and affected Flemish Mannerist style.
