Throughout his career Andy Warhol held a particular fascination with identity construction. As an individual concerned with his own image and someone who understood the creation of celebrity, the drag sensibility was especially attractive to Warhol.
Celebrating celebrity, identity, and image, Joslyn Art Museum moves from high art to camp on Friday,
October 24, 7-11 PM with a drag queen show and Studio 54 dance party.
Ages 21 and over. Admission is free for members; $10 general public at the door.
7 - 8 PM Exhibition Viewing
In Living Color: Andy Warhol and Contemporary Printmaking from the Collections of Jordon D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation examines how Warhol's use of color impacts both subject and viewer, creating a dialogue between Warhol and nineteen contemporary artists who all use color to shape how we understand images.
8 - 9 PM Drag Performances
After exhibition viewing, the drag queens take the stage at 8pm with emcee Joe DeSanti and live performances by Aubrey Savage, Giselle Steever, Destiney, Anna Roxia, Tharin Crase, and special guests 'Cher,' 'Liza Minnelli' and 'Marilyn Monroe.'
9-11 PM Studio 54 Dance Party
Following the glitz and glam of the drag show, the Museum transforms into Studio 54, the popular, anything-goes New York nightclub of 1970s and famous hangout of Andy Warhol. At Studio 54, social elites and drag queens, athletes and artists, debutantes and Factory hipsters all came together on the strobe-lit dance floor.
