Joslyn Art Museum — a non-profit, cultural and educational environment — provides a variety of experiences for people interested in volunteering. The Museum offers several options, diverse in program type and commitment level. Many volunteer opportunities present the chance to enrich your enjoyment of the visual arts as well as increase your knowledge of the museum world. In addition, you will make new friends and receive many intangible rewards while performing a valuable service to Joslyn Art Museum and the community.

    Training
    Training varies according to the program. Orientation will be provided by your staff contact and training is on-the-job and hands-on.

    Volunteer Opportunities

    Joslyn's Hitchcock Museum Shop
    Joslyn's Hitchcock Museum Shop features a wide array of unique merchandise for adults and children. Responsibilities include cash handling skills, simple computer skills or the willingness to learn, interest in talking to a variety of Museum guests, and desire to learn more about Joslyn's collections and special exhibitions. Minimum time commitment: at least two shifts per month. Volunteers are needed during the Museum's public hours and for special events when the Shop is open.

    Joslyn Information Assistant (JIA)
    Joslyn Information Assistants (JIAs) help at the Visitor Services Center on the weekends and for special programs. Responsibilities include greeting visitors, providing directions within the Museum, handing out printed material, and answering general questions. Most importantly, JIAs create a warm, inviting environment for our visitors, enhancing their experience at Joslyn Art Museum. Minimum time commitment: one Saturday or Sunday shift per month. Volunteers are occasionally needed for special events.

    Art Works Volunteer
    Volunteers in this new interactive space welcome visitors, introduce various activities, assist with open-ended art exploration, and help maintain a comfortable and tidy environment for all to enjoy. Minimum time commitment: two shifts per month, Tuesday-Sunday, or Thursday evening.

    Landscape Maintenance Volunteer
    There is almost always something to do outdoors to help keep Joslyn's campus beautiful: mulching, weeding, planting. Minimum time commitment: varies and, ideally, occurs during weekday business hours, however, if the task is as simple as weeding, evening and weekend shifts may be arranged.

    Membership Table Volunteer
    Membership Volunteers staff the Membership Table and greet visitors, provide information membership, and assist with membership applications. Minimum time commitment: one Saturday or Sunday shift per month. Volunteers are occasionally needed for special events.
     
    Scott EdTech Gallery Volunteer
    The Scott EdTech Gallery offers educational resources for visitors, including Art Packs, gallery guides, books, and computers. Volunteers open and close the area, engage with visitors, distribute educational materials, and help maintain a tidy the space. Minimum time commitment: two shifts per month. Volunteers are needed during the Museum's public hours, Tuesday-Friday.

    Joslyn Docent
    Docents are specially trained volunteers who conduct tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions for children and adults. The Docent program is a separate program from the Joslyn Volunteer program Click here to learn more.

    Kent Bellows Mentoring Program Volunteer
    Limited volunteer opportunities are available at the Kent Bellows Studio (33rd and Leavenworth St.) for those who want to assist in our mission of helping young people discover their creative voice through mentorship with professional artists.  Click here to learn more.
