Shape of Space: The Sculpture of George Sugarman by George Sugarman. Illustrated, 114 pages, paperback. Joslyn Art Museum, 1981.
Joslyn celebrated its fiftieth anniversary year with a retrospective of the sculpture of George Sugarman. Sugarman's work, in its striking bold colors and abundance of invented forms, embodies the spirit of celebration, a celebration of the spirit of independence and innovation. Beyond the initial emotion evoked by the show's exuberant colors and forms, it is possible to approach the exhibition through the internal logic and structure of individual works. Each has a continuity of interests: energy, relationship to the surrounding space, unity in a complex diversity, continuity and change, openess.
