With their enormous proportions and mug-shot frontality, Alfred Leslie's portraits are as austere and iconic as the paintings by the pop and abstract artists of the sixties. Against a neutral background, he presents each figure in a strong light that distorts and flattens it within a shallow space. In this double portrait of identical twins, Leslie's concern for each individual's physical traits portrays the women as certainly sisters, but seemingly of different ages.
