Joslyn Art Museum Organized Art Trips

Joslyn Art Museum offers annual art trips ranging from one- or two-day excursions to U.S. cities, viewing special exhibitions and museum collections, to two-week international trips. Some trips are open only to Joslyn's Patron members or members of the Museum's collectors' groups, while others are open to the general public.

A Day in Denver

Participants in Joslyn Art Museum's spring art excursion to Denver, Colorado, on Tuesday, May 6, will enjoy a full day of art and architecture in the Mile High City situated at the base of the Rocky Mountains.

Upon arrival in Denver, tour-goers will begin the day with breakfast and shopping. Plans are also being made for a possible exclusive tour of a private art collection in the city. Joslyn travelers will then take in the special exhibition Inspiring Impressionism at the Denver Art Museum (DAM).

Through side-by-side comparisons, this important show demonstrates that Impressionists, who are popularly seen as artistic revolutionaries, drew inspiration from earlier artists, including Raphael, El Greco, Rubens, van Rysdael, Velazquez, and Watteau. The exhibition features about 100 works of art, including 65 artworks by Impressionist painters such as Monet, Degas, and Renoir.

Also on view will be Clyfford Still Unveiled: Selections from the Estate. A leader among first-generation abstract expressionists, Clyfford Still is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century, but most of his work has not been seen by the public. Still's estate — which includes 94 percent of his work — was sealed after his death in 1980. This exhibition features 13 paintings, including a 1940 self-portrait, several never-before-seen works on paper, and five 1940s and 1950s masterworks that show the evolution of Still's mature, purely abstract style. The Clyfford Still Museum will open next door to the DAM in 2010.

In addition to the special exhibitions, participants may explore DAM's permanent collection. Denver Art Museum is the largest art museum between Chicago and the West coast. The museum features treasures from around the world and its collections of American Indian, pre-Columbian, and Spanish colonial art are among the finest in the U.S. In October 2006, to much fanfare, DAM opened its 146,000-square-foot Hamilton Building designed by internationally renowned architect Daniel Libeskind. The Hamilton Building's design recalls the peaks of the Rocky Mountains and geometric rock crystals found in the foothills near Denver and is covered in 9,000 titanium panels that reflect the Colorado sunshine. In addition, participants may visit the collections in what is now known as the North Building of the DAM, a seven-story, 210,000-square-foot building designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti, that opened in 1971.

This one-day trip is $395 per person and includes round trip air fare (United Airlines leaving Omaha 7 am, arriving Denver, 7:30 am; return flight leaving Denver 7 pm, arriving Omaha 9:20 pm), ground transportation, travel escort, museum and tour fees, and gratuities. Deadline for registration is Friday, March 7, at which time notification will be mailed to the first 25 registered. Remaining registrations will be placed on a waiting list. In case of participant cancellation following the booking, a refund of the full amount, less a $100 name change fee will be granted until April 6 if a replacement is found.
